Spotify is a Swedish audio streaming and media services provider founded on 23 April 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. It is the world’s largest music streaming service provider, with over 365 million monthly active users, including 165 million paying subscribers, as of June 2021.
What we did
Convincing budget conscious students to pay for a premium music streaming service is a tough challenge. Our solution lay in making Spotify synonymous with taking student life up a level. We created an ‘always on’ programme, punctuated with flagship moments, to enhance students’ lives with Spotify everyday. Delivered on campus and social media by our super passionate and influential Spotify Student crew, recruited from our tastemaker network.
Through ‘Hello Freshers’ we welcomed students at the start of term before playing on their rivalries with ‘Spotify Sound Clash’ – a nationwide, inter-uni playlist battle that made the platform their key weapon. We created ‘Spotify Secret Social’, an epic, one-night-only event at a mystery location, before saying ‘Hello Alps’ to 10k influential students with our custom Swedish Fire Truck. And, because we know that sometimes students just want to do their own thing, we supported their parties and provided the tools to run the best student parties on campus…
The results
The programme has seen Spotify become THE No.1 choice for music streaming for students. Likelihood of recommendation amongst students has increased by 50%. Student premium subscriptions have more than tripled. The growth of student Monthly Active Users continues to outstrip any other age group. After significantly outstripping all other markets for growth, the programme was rolled out across Europe, the US, Canada and Brazil.
